What is the Noche de San Juan?

St John's Eve is celebrated every year on 23 June, traditionally coinciding with the summer solstice. Although it is now linked to St John the Baptist, its origins are far older, rooted in pagan rituals of fire and purification. Fire symbolises leaving the negative behind, while the sea represents renewal and good luck.

All along the Costa del Sol, thousands of people gather on the beach to symbolically say goodbye to the old and welcome the summer.

The most popular San Juan traditions

Burning wishes or bad memories. One of the most widespread customs is to write down what you want to leave behind — or a wish for the months ahead — and throw the paper into the fire. It's a symbolic ritual at the heart of this magical night.
Entering the sea at midnight. Another beloved tradition is to wet your feet or step into the water as the clock strikes 00:00. Many believe this ritual brings luck, health and new opportunities for the rest of the year.

3. La Carihuela (Torremolinos)

La Carihuela is one of the province's best-known places to live this night. Beach, chiringuitos and an international crowd make this one of the liveliest celebrations on the Costa del Sol.

4. La Misericordia and La Malagueta (Málaga)

In Málaga city, thousands gather on these beaches each year for concerts, fireworks and the traditional burning of the "júas" — effigies symbolising what people want to leave behind.
